Professional Experience
1999-present Chairman of the Board, BrightPlanet, Sioux Falls, SD. Joint venture with Paulsen Marketing Communications, Inc. Responsible for financial modeling and technical implementation of a new, automated Internet content aggregation service. Authored first paper quantifying and characterizing the "deep" Web, a huge class of emerging content within searchable databases on the Internet that is 500 times larger than what is indexable by standard search engines. Co-responsible for securing venture investments and initial customers.
1997-1999 Chairman of the Board, The WebTools Co., Vermillion, SD. A wholly-owned subsidiary established to commercialize the Mata Hari¨ Internet search tool. Subsidiary disbanded upon formation of BrightPlanet.com LLC.
1994-present President and Chairman of the Board, VisualMetrics Corp., Iowa City, IA. Overall management, project, staff and business development for systems software development company specializing in database systems and data warehousing. Raised $2 M in venture funds. Designed and guided development of Mata Hari. Principal investigator for Phases I and II $1 million SBIR grants from the NIH with a major collaboration with Iowa State University on a genome informatics data system, now termed the BioStreamª bioinformatics workstation.
Mr. Bergman has frequently testified before the U.S. Congress on technology and commercialization issues and has been a keynote or invited speaker at more than 80 national industry meetings. He is also a certified group facilitator from the American Institute for Interactive Management (AIIM).
