Sonja Panday

International Trade Canada
From 2000 - 2004, Sonja Panday was a Portal Development Officer with the Government On-Line Division of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada. During this period she played a key role in the development and management of the Government of Canada’s non-Canadians Gateway (also known as Canada International), and led the inter-departmental Canada International Marketing Communications Working Group.
Marketing the Gateway presented special challenges, as the broad nature of Canada International’s target audience (non-Canadians around the world), the diverse content available, and a limited marketing budget available for promotional activities, have precluded the use of conventional marketing methods such as the use of print and broadcast media.
Sonja assigned a high priority to the development of tools to use the web to market to the web, garnered support from the Working Group partners and senior management, and started strategic search engine optimization in 2002, with an emphasis on organic search optimization. This strategy has proven to be highly effective, with the Gateway seeing dramatic increases in traffic. Canada International has continued to maintain and expand the search engine optimization process and is currently focussing on building link popularity.
